Touch yourself more often!

A few years ago I had my first encounter with breast cancer when my aunt, was diagnosed and had to undergo a mastectomy. We had little knowledge back then about cancer and it was kind of a taboo topic . Fast forward to 2016 I have since lost three aunts to breast cancer , one aunt to cancer and one is currently a double mastectomy cancer survivor.

According to the National Cancer Registry Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in women of all races, with a lifetime risk of 1 in 33 in South Africa. The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) has been leading the fight against cancer in South Africa for the past 82 years. Funding research with a yearly spend of R12 million, they offer prevention/educational campaigns , support services to those affected by cancer and patient care amongst other services.

Yes I realise it isn’t October where amidst the pink flurry of ribbons and messages of hope you feel proud knowing that you’ve made a difference. And you have!

While raising money funds research, mobile health clinics and much-needed services in communities the real difference we should be making is being educated and empowered enough to take charge of our health.

Prevention as they say is always better than cure and this can be as simple as making a lifestyle change by tweaking your diet, going for regular check ups and knowing your body by doing monthly self examinations.

As we move towards a world where we invest in ourselves first, spiritually, emotionally and financially we need to realise that giving ourselves a clean bill of health as scary as it might be is a long-term investment. Today we live longer and work harder. Taking care of your health is not only the best gift you can give yourself but it will improve your quality of life!

Drinking champagne on a beer budget!

I have always had a penchant for treating myself to the little things in life. You know ‘The keep me sane in moments of complete chaos’, the picker uppers, the ‘your life isn’t bad , this is just a bad moment’, those things that make a bad day instantly better. This loosely translates to a spa visit, cupping , an occasional splurge on a must have bag, Russian red lipstick, a lunch date at that quirky restaurant, candy floss cupcakes, vanilla candles, poetry and ,and and.

Recently however I’ve been feeling a bit guilty when it comes to spending money on myself and I don’t know if this is because I’m successfully ‘adulting’ or because we are going through tough economic times.

All I know is I don’t like it, not one bit. So in an attempt to hold onto my sanity I have given myself permission to be okay with investing in ME and isn’t there an old adage along the lines of ‘if you don’t fill your cup no one else will’?!

So now I’m living champagne on a beer budget. I still invest in a good splurge now and then by using my Cost Per Wear Ratio formula. This is the Total cost of the item/ estimated number of days you’ll wear it = the cost per wear. This justifies my purchase when I can see the total amount I am spending on an item every time I wear it.I instantly feel better. Talk about value for money and all it took was a change in attitude and logic. Go figure.

When it comes to make up , a good lipstick can do wonders. For all the avid MAC wearers, they have a ‘Back-to-M·A·C Program. ‘By returning six [6] M·A·C primary packaging containers to a M·A·C counter or M·A·C Cosmetics online, you’ll receive a free M·A·C lipstick of your choice as our thanks to you.’ Score !!!

Sites like Groupon who send emails with deals-of-the-day is a great way to get discounted rates on massages and so much more. As it says on the website ‘Commonly, the deals are 50% discounts at a particular restaurant, or 50% discounts at a particular store.

For travelling purposes I almost always use . There honestly are plenty of sites who offer online accommodation but I love mainly because I have received such great deals on hotels locally and internationally in the past. Believed to be ‘one of Google’s largest advertisers’ , they must be doing something right.

To help me reach my final decision I then head on over to Tripadvisor this is where I not only get a comparison price but most importantly this is where I read ALL reviews about the hotel I’m interested in. I immediately know if the price I am paying will mirror the experience.

And then finally when it comes to those ‘gourmet eateries’. Some have introduced a ‘Two course lunch’, a summer menu or a Gourmand menu with or without wine or tea pairing at a fixed rate. Where others offer half price sushi or happy hour at a certain time. You know exactly what you will be spending before you make your booking . No surprises and no compromising .

Happy champagne drinking everyone xoxo

Look Good..Feel Great!

‘I became a juicy woman.I soon realised that my inner succulence needed external manifestation. I knew what I wanted :i wanted to wear a party outfit every day. I wanted to feel special every day. I needed my body to feel honoured as much as my mind and spirit. I began to create a lifestyle that would reflect this. I choose to join circles where I felt honoured, enriched, happy and special and could honestly make others feel the same. Over the years I have created a wardrobe filled with clothes, accessories and underwear that excites me. I shop sensually. I touch and smell fabrics, Imagining the adventures I can have in each item before I buy it. I wonder whether it will make my skin feel alive and what kind of moods the colour will bring out in me. I bejewel myself because I want to shimmer as I move through the world, reflecting my inner sparkle.’One of my favourite passages from one of my all time favourite books. Marlene Wasserman, author of Pillow book: Creating a sensual lifestyle by Dr Eve.

I have always been fascinated about how when I feel good I project that energy into the universe and I’m greeted with all kinds of positive interactions.

Studies now show that there are links between what you wear and your emotional state and rightly so. The way we dress increases our confidence, and has the potential to lift our mood. On the other hand when our mood plummets and we feel sad we don’t focus on how we look.

A few years ago, through work I was introduced to an organisation called ‘Look Good…Feel Better‘. A programme that helps women facing trauma or the stress of cancer overcome their appearance due to treatment ,in a 12 step skin care and make up regime. These sessions give women the opportunity to be pampered and to interact with other’s who are going through a similar experience. When they leave these sessions, beauty products in hand not only do they look good they feel even better.

So what are you waiting for?! Wear the dress, put on your favourite shade of lipstick, have your nails done. Buy the shoes. Wear your party dress every day!

Body Positive

The body positive movement has captured my heart so much so that my days are spent reading every blog post , looking at every Instagram picture and absorbing every story . They have brought to life my words, conversations , and my struggles .Battles  I conquered day by day in the smallest way without realising it until now.

Thank you Gabi Fresh , Nicolette Mason, Allison Teng, Callie Thorpe, Tanesha Awasthi,  Mind the curves, Lauren from all about that bass,Trendy Curvy and the countless others for paving the way.

Tanesha Awasthi

These  feel good stories are my daily motivators. Looking back I wish I had these affirmations and positivity whilst growing up in a world that dictated how your body needed to look. And if you did not fit in the mould cast by society you were left to feel flawed.

Being fat can not be the worst thing to be in life, can it? Welcome a new age, of body loving. Acceptance for, all regardless of our size!!!

Ever had a feeling of utter exhilaration , moments that set your soul on fire.. From the minute I came home from my first trip, I had this indescribable feeling. All I could dream about was packing my bags and hitting the road . I wanted to feel the wind in my hair and sun on my skin,as I walked streets unknown to me,  where I felt  like I could be anyone I wanted to be.

I love the feeling of absolute freedom & independence that comes with travelling. And for maybe the second time in my life I discovered what it felt like to have complete peace within my soul.

wanderlust  wɒndəlʌst/Submit noun a strong desire to travel.

“a man consumed by wanderlust”.

And boy oh boy was I lusting after anything and everything foreign. I live for moments where I become a child of the universe and everything is an adventure. From quad biking up to see Big Buddha, hiking mountains to visit waterfalls, offering sacrifices to the God’s at temples where royal families still reside, to visiting hammams for an authentic Turkish bath! The spice markets , the summer palaces, the road that has been walked a million times before you , new to you yet the sense of belonging you feel makes you realise that we are a global community after all.

And  as the saying goes ‘ I travel because life is short and the World is huge’!
